Sonalika Tractors: Powering Agriculture, Empowering Farmers

Sonalika Tractors, an Indian agricultural machinery manufacturer, has established itself as a key player in the global tractor industry. Founded in 1995 in Punjab, India, the company has grown steadily, becoming the third-largest tractor manufacturer in India. With a remarkable production capacity of 300,000 tractors annually, as of June 2017, Sonalika has emerged as a vital force in the agricultural sector, exporting its products to over 150 countries.

A Legacy of Innovation

Sonalika Tractors operates under the umbrella of International Tractors Limited, the flagship entity of the Sonalika Group. The visionary founder, Lachhman Das Mittal, laid the foundation for this agricultural powerhouse. The journey began in 1969 when International Tractors Limited was incorporated, and the company sold its first tractor in 1996. The brand “Sonalika” was crafted in collaboration with the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI).

Global Partnerships and Growth

Sonalika’s commitment to excellence and global reach led to significant partnerships. In 2000, French tractor maker Renault Agriculture acquired a 20% stake in the company, forming a Sonalika-Renault joint venture to market tractors worldwide. These tractors were branded as ‘Solis’ globally but retained the ‘Sonalika’ identity in India.

However, in August 2005, Sonalika reacquired its stake from Renault when Renault Agriculture was acquired by Germany’s Claas Motors. Following this, Japanese company Yanmar invested in Sonalika, acquiring a 12% stake in October 2005. Yanmar’s partnership continued to strengthen over the years, with a 30% stake in the company after Blackstone Group’s exit in December 2016.

Sonalika’s global expansion also included setting up assembly plants in countries like Brazil, Iran, Argentina, Algeria, and Cameroon. The company’s world-class manufacturing facility in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, stands as the world’s largest tractor manufacturing unit, covering 85 acres of land and featuring cutting-edge production capabilities, including robotic paint facilities.

Product Portfolio

Sonalika offers a diverse range of tractors, with models like the DI, RX Series, WT Series, GT Series, Sikander Series, Customized Series (Chhatrapati, Mahabali & Maharaja), MM Series, Tiger Series, and Sikander DLX Series. The brand ‘Solis’ represents its tractors on a global scale.

Global Recognition

Sonalika Tractors has earned numerous accolades and recognition for its contributions to the agricultural sector. Notably, it holds a 60% market share in Algeria, 22% in Nepal, and 20% in Bangladesh. The company operates in over 150 countries, making it one of India’s leading tractor exporters.

In 2019, Sonalika Tractors received the Best Tractor for Agriculture award for its Sonalika Worldtrac 600 and the Best Design Tractor Award for Solis 5015 at the Indian Tractor of the Year (ITOTY) Awards.

Additionally, it was honored with the 11th Global Agriculture Leadership Award by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) in the Industry Leadership category in 2018. The company was also part of the ‘Champions of Change’ program organized by Niti Aayog in 2017.

A Bright Future

Sonalika Tractors continues to drive agricultural innovation and excellence, contributing significantly to the growth of the Indian tractor industry and making its mark on the global stage.
