The plant’s first major achievement was the creation of the 60 hp tracked tractor C-60 (Сталинец-60), powered by petroleum ether. World War II and the “Tankograd”

During World War II, Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant played a crucial role in the Soviet Union’s defense efforts. The plant became the nucleus of what was colloquially known as “Танкоград” or ‘Tankograd.’ Numerous industrial entities, including most of Leningrad’s Kirov Plant, were relocated to Chelyabinsk. The workforce swelled to 60,000 employees by 1944, where they were instrumental in producing 18,000 tanks, 48,500 tank diesel engines, and over 17 million units of ammunition. This production included iconic tanks like the KV, T-34, KV-85, IS, and the T-34/85.

Post-War Resumption and Innovations

Following World War II, ChTZ resumed its conventional tractor production with the introduction of the С-80 (Сталинец-80) in 1946. The plant reverted to its original name of Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory in 1958. In subsequent years, the company introduced innovations like the DET-250, a tractor with a diesel-electric transmission system. In 1990, a tractor featuring a hydromechanical transmission system, the T-10, entered production.

In 2008, Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant expanded its operations by acquiring the amphibious tracked machine building company “Vityaz” (Витязь). This move solidified the plant’s position within the Uralvagonzavod holding group, formed in collaboration with other companies.

Operations and Diverse Products

ChTZ’s operations encompass a wide range of capabilities, including foundry and forging facilities, metal engineering facilities with advanced CNC machinery, lathes, and heat treatment equipment. The plant also features construction and assembly workshops.

As of 2011, Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant manufactures both wheeled and tracked tractors and related modified vehicles. Additionally, it produces powerful tractor engines, reaching up to approximately 1,000 hp (750 kW), as well as formidable tank engines capable of delivering up to 1,500 hp (1,100 kW). The production includes the 12N360 engine used in the T-14 tank.

Since 2010, the company has been involved in the production of forklifts under a licensing agreement with the Bulgarian company Balkancar Record. ChTZ also extends its expertise to manufacturing road tanker vehicles, semi-trailers, and pipe installation road vehicles.

Sanctions and Challenges

As of May 8, 2022, Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant encountered operational challenges due to sanctions imposed following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. U.S. officials claimed that the plant’s tank production had ceased, rendering it “idle” due to a shortage of imported parts. However, the factory reported fulfilling an order for an unspecified number of diesel engines in December 2022.

Subsidiaries

Since 2008, Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant’s subsidiary, the Machine Engineering Company ‘Vityaz’ (Машиностроительная компания “Витязь”), has been known for producing the Vityaz line of tracked all-terrain vehicles with amphibious capabilities.
